The Tomorrowland design team was tasked with creating an armature for Disney storytelling that was appropriate and responsive to Shanghai’s challenging and varied environmental conditions. The arcing canopy that dominates the composition of the space provides shelter to both a sinuous roller coaster track and to guests below, redirecting rainfall and mitigating harsh sunlight as appropriate. Mechanical systems are relied upon minimally to cool and heat outdoors spaces, instead maximizing reliance on natural ventilation. This strategy extends to queueing zones and outdoor dining areas in particular. The geometries of the architecture are formed so as to encourage breezes where possible, shade guests from the summer sun and strategically expose some areas to sunlight, particularly during shorter winter days. The landscape design also accommodates seasonal changes, filling with water to create stylized wetlands during the rainy season and subsiding to reveal patterns of plantings during drier months. The design of the prominent canopy, composed of a steel structure arrayed with pillows of ETFE, utilized form-finding software and the expertise of engineers in order to provide the lightest possible structure utilizing the least amount of raw materials possible. The resulting iconic structure is thus highly efficient, providing an armature for additional lighting effects and infrastructure while capturing the imaginations of guests. A custom frit pattern adorns each ETFE pillow, diffusing light and adding texture, while the high arches that define the canopy’s perimeter frame key views of the roller coaster and the park beyond. The design team was also keenly interested in social sustainability, accommodating a diverse, multi-generational audience by providing shaded or covered walkways and dining areas, generous seating options and eco-friendly climate control strategies that keep visitors of all ages comfortable and able to enjoy Tomorrowland together.
